Blade of the Immortal Review

Animation Production – Bee Train

Director – Koichi Mashimo

First of all I have to say that this has one of the worst first episodes of any series I have seen in past couple of the years. It was completely ridiculous and had terrible dialogue. It continues this into the 3rd episode which has one of the most disturbing character/enemy I have ever seen. However after getting past the first few episodes it became bearable if you enjoy this particular style of anime. I would even say latter half of the anime is quite good.

The violence and fights in this anime is the reason to watch this show. The show is structured around an immortal bodyguard hired by the heiress of a fallen dojo to seek for the murder of her parents. They encounter the members of the offending clan and episodes are centered around these fights. It is similar in style to the Samurai X shows and share the same amount of violence with shows like Afro Samurai. It is extremely bloody and you can expect plenty of severed limbs.

The reason that my opinion of the show turned after the first few episodes were the interesting fights. Since the main character (Manji) is immortal you know he is going to win but the action is well done. The opponents become less disturbing which was what made me dislike the show at first. If you are not a fan of this style of anime there is very little reason to watch this but at 13 episodes it wouldn’t be a terrible way of spending your time.

Koichi Mashimo is an experienced director of many popular TV series such as Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Noir, .Hack, and Dominion Tank Police.
